#3. Susan Teaches - Discernment: Practical Methods to Know Truth - Who is on Your Truth Teller List, and Why? (WRITTEN Classet Series)
Each of us has the ability to discern truth. It requires paying attention to what is happening around us and paying attention to our intuition within. Here are some practical methods to do just that.
Last month we talked about some possible blocks that prevent us from wanting to even know truth in the first place. The responsibility of knowing truth. And the costs we individually pay for living a lie.
This month we are talking about our Truth Teller list. Yep, we all have one. Who or what is our source of information? We will get to who is on this list in a moment. But first, let’s consider these questions:
Is our source of information constantly correct?
If the Truth Tellers in our lives are not 100% correct, at what percentage do they perform in regards to giving us accurate information?
If that number is less than 100%, at what number are we comfortable with? 98%? 54%? Less?
At what standard are we holding our Truth Tellers to and why?
Now let’s talk about the actual list. Who are we talking to and why? Who do we trust? Consider people, places, events, organizations, etc. Where are we spending our time and who are we listening to?
Take a moment and step away from this classet to write down your own Truth Teller list. Who and what are on your list? Perhaps you can highlight the Truth Tellers that are the most accurate above all others. Examples of this is could be over time, does their advice prove to be helpful? And, is there actual evidence that their words and actions are spot on?
Consider Categories: When seeking advice or information, not all Truth Tellers are the same. What role do they play for you? What gives them that expertise? For example, someone may be stellar at technical advice but lousy at spiritual advise. If you want to use your Truth Teller list to full advantage you may want to add categories to each one on the list, remembering that some sources of truth can be appropriate for multiple categories. Perhaps your most trusted advisor is appropriate for all category discussions.
Consider Tree Rings: My most valued Truth Tellers are in my inner circle of life, just like tree rings. The more outer rings are for acquaintances I don’t trust as much or for those I don’t know very well - I would never go to them for advice. If an acquaintance proves trustworthy over time, they would gravitate to my inner rings. If a trusted person or organization proves to be unethical/cruel/dishonest/etc., I would move them out of the tree all together. We get to decide who we associate with and why.
What to do with your Truth Teller list? Simply being aware that it exists is a huge help. Awareness is everything. As you consider your list, you may have insights about your process of seeking truth. Write them down. Here are some other things to consider:
Do you have a clear knowledge of your Truth Teller’s own method of determining truth (thus, how they come to the information thy might impart to you as truth)? Have you asked them how they know truth? Do you trust their method? Why?
Who is on the list that perhaps means well, but doesn’t always give you sound advice? Is there anyone there that actually doesn’t have your best interest at heart and may mean you harm?
Why are these people/organizations/etc on your list? What does it mean if you cannot clearly answer this question?
Can you fine tune your truth seeking by defining or changing categories or tree rings? Can you shift someone to a more appropriate role in your life where they can shine instead of bringing you down? For example, having a rare coffee with a less-than-truthful-person instead of seeking advice from them when making your important decisions.
Be willing to purge your list. This does not have to be suddenly nor entirely.
Knowing who to trust is a life long process. Let it evolve as you get better at it.
And don’t forget, an extended version of this classet is available with a paid subscription in podcast form with more material and a guided meditation on the monthly topic.
